Number of bottles

20 litres is 59 bottles of 330 mL once the bottom of the fermenter is left behind. Choose your size and the tool counts.

Size:

E.g. 330, 750.

0 by default.

Why count your bottles in advance?

Nothing is more frustrating than running out of clean bottles halfway through bottling, or having washed and sanitised twenty too many. Counting in advance lets you prepare just enough bottles, caps and sugar.

The calculation removes the losses: the yeast sediment at the bottom of the fermenter, which is not racked, and what stays in the tubing.

How is the number of bottles calculated?

The usable volume is divided by the bottle size, and rounded down to the last full bottle:

bottles = whole part of ((volume − losses) × 1000 / size in mL)

Allow 0.5 to 1 L of losses for a 20 L brew. Always prepare two or three more bottles than the result.

Worked example

Values entered

  • Beer volume in litres: 20
  • Bottle size in mL: 330
  • Losses (keg bottom, yeast) in litres: 0.5

Result from the tool

Number of full bottles
59

What the tool does not do

  • The tool counts full bottles: the last one, half filled, is not counted.
  • It assumes a single size: for a mix of sizes, do the calculation twice.
  • The actual fill level varies by a few millilitres from one bottle to the next.

Frequently asked questions

How many 750 mL bottles in 20 litres?

26 full bottles, with or without the usual half-litre of losses.

How much loss should I allow?

Between 0.5 and 1 L per 20 L: the yeast sediment at the bottom of the fermenter and the contents of the tubing. Heavy dry hopping increases the losses.

And with the assistant?

Ask Krausi the same question in plain language: he picks this tool, does the calculation and files the result in your project.

I have 20 L to bottle in 330 mL bottles, how many should I prepare?

With half a litre of losses, you will fill 59 bottles of 330 mL. Prepare 62 to have a little margin.
